About Daggett, California: The Mojave's Cultural Crossroads

Nestled in the heart of San Bernardino County, deep within the Mojave Desert, Daggett is a small but historically rich town that tells the story of early American industry, cultural diversity, and the rise of modern transportation. Founded in the 1880s as a key railroad junction, Daggett quickly grew into a lively support hub for nearby silver and borax mining operations, which fueled much of the region’s early prosperity.

Among its enduring landmarks is the remarkable "Russian House." a stone structure built by Russian immigrants in the early 20th century. These settlers sought new beginnings in the American West, and their craftsmanship left behind one of Daggett’s most distinctive and culturally significant buildings. The Russian House remains a powerful reminder of the Mojave’s multicultural roots.

When U.S. Route 66 was established in 1926, Daggett entered a new era of activity, with its location making it an essential stop for travelers journeying across the unforgiving desert. Though the construction of Interstate 40 in the 1970s diverted much of the traffic, Daggett has retained its vintage charm.

Today, its preserved buildings, weathered garages, and the storied Russian House invite visitors to experience a living piece of Route 66 history, offering a window into the rugged and diverse past of the Mojave Desert.
