About Conway, Missouri: A Small Town with Big Route 66 Heritage

Founded in the 1860s, Conway sits on the original 1926–1953 alignment of Route 66 in Laclede County, tracing a north–south course between Phillipsburg and Sampson. During the highway’s golden years, it welcomed travelers to local landmarks like the Harris Café, a gas station that served steady traffic, and the original Top O’ Th’ Ozarks, a popular  destination until it was destroyed by a fire in 1950.

Conway also offered travelers one of Route 66’s most iconic sights: a bold Meramec Caverns barn ad painted on the roof of a blue barn. These roadside advertisements once dotted the landscape and became symbols of American car culture. Conway’s barn remains a cherished relic of that era.

Even though the town was skirted in 1953 when the new four-lane highway was constructed (which became I-44), Conway adjusted. Tourists now discover a Route 66 memorial rest area off of Exit 113, where interpretive signs and serene spaces pay tribute to the highway’s memory. Every year, Conway celebrates the area's heritage along with its surrounding towns at the Lebanon Route 66 Festival, preserving the tales of the Mother Road for successive generations.
