About Clinton, Oklahoma: Crossroads of the Mother Road

Established in 1903, Clinton grew into an important commercial center in western Oklahoma. When U.S. Route 66 was designated in 1926, the highway brought generations of motorists through town, supporting gas stations, restaurants, motels and other roadside businesses.

Known as the Hub City of Western Oklahoma, Clinton became a familiar stop along the Mother Road. Route 66 followed several alignments through the community before the highway was officially decommissioned in 1985.

Today, Clinton's best-known Route 66 attraction is the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum. Operated by the Oklahoma Historical Society, the museum takes visitors through the highway's history, exploring the changing decades of American travel, roadside culture and the communities that grew alongside Route 66.

Another piece of Clinton's highway heritage is the Glancy Motor Hotel, which opened in 1950 and welcomed travelers during the heyday of the Mother Road. Although the motel was demolished in 2023, its distinctive neon sign was saved. Preservation efforts are intended to give the sign a new home at the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, keeping an important part of Clinton's roadside history alive.

Clinton also celebrates its highway heritage through Route 66 festivities and classic car gatherings, bringing enthusiasts together to appreciate the vehicles, places and people that shaped the American road trip. Today, Clinton remains an important stop for anyone exploring Route 66 across Oklahoma.
