About Chenoa, Illinois: Where Highways and History Meet
Chenoa is a historic McLean County town situated along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Founded in 1854 and later incorporated in 1865, the town quickly became known as the "Crossroads of Opportunity" thanks to its prime location, precisely where Route 66 intersects with Route 24. This strategic position turned Chenoa into a busy hub for commerce and a welcome rest stop for motorists traveling across the Midwest.
Chenoa's history is preserved in its landmarks. The Matthew T. Scott House (located at 227 N. First Ave.), dating to 1855, offers visitors a glimpse into the town's pioneer past. Along Route 66, travelers can spot the restored Selz Royal Blue Shoes sign, a vibrant piece of 1930s roadside advertising that has been lovingly preserved, adding vintage charm to the streetscape. The Chenoa Pharmacy at 1000 E. Cemetery Ave. still boasts its original 1889 storefront, evoking the feel of a bygone era.
Every May, Chenoa takes part in the Red Carpet Corridor Festival, inviting travelers to experience live entertainment, food and Route 66 nostalgia. With its mix of historic architecture, roadside icons and warm hospitality, Chenoa stands as a perfect example of a small town that keeps the legacy of Route 66 alive.
