About Bushyhead, Oklahoma: A Cherokee Namesake on the Mother Road
Bushyhead lies along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Rogers County, where Historic Route 66 and OK-66 wind through quiet countryside. An unincorporated community with a population of 1,314 (according to the 2010 Census), Bushyhead takes its name from Dennis Wolfe Bushyhead, principal chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1879 to 1887.
Established in the early 20th century, Bushyhead was once a modest stop for travelers, offering essentials like a general store and gas station. While these roadside fixtures have largely disappeared, the town's connection to the Mother Road remains through its location and heritage.
Bushyhead's rural setting, framed by open fields and wooded stretches, speaks to a slower pace of life - the kind that many Route 66 travelers seek when they veer off the interstate. Its Cherokee roots give the community a cultural depth, reminding visitors that Route 66 passes through lands shaped by diverse histories long before the highway's creation.
Located near the Ed Galloway Totem Pole Park in Foyil, OK and within easy reach of events like the Chelsea Totem Pole BBQ & Music Fest (supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association) Bushyhead is part of a cluster of northeastern Oklahoma towns that together keep the spirit of the Mother Road alive.
Today, Bushyhead remains a quiet, close-knit place, proving that Route 66's legacy is not only about neon lights and roadside attractions, but also about the enduring stories of small communities along the way.
