About Broadwell, Illinois: A Slice of Route 66 Food History
Broadwell is a small but storied Logan County village located along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Founded in 1850 and platted in 1856 by William Broadwell, the town earned national recognition as the "Home of the Pig Hip Restaurant."
Opening in 1937 at 101 W. Oak St., the Pig Hip quickly became famous for its signature pig hip sandwich (thinly sliced ham piled on a buttered and grilled bun with lettuce, tomato and the restaurant's signature "Pig Hip Dip.") For more than five decades, it was a staple of Route 66 road culture, drawing travelers eager for a meal they couldn't find anywhere else. Though the restaurant closed in 1991 and was later completely destroyed by a fire in 2007, its memory endures. A memorial on North Frontage Road, complete with a restored neon sign, ensures the Pig Hip's story continues to be told.
Broadwell also holds other reminders of highway history. The Pioneer Rest Motel, a 1950s-era motor lodge, recalls the golden years of roadside lodging. Nearby, the Tantivy Inn Site marks the location of a 19th-century roadhouse along an even earlier gravel road, underscoring Broadwell's long-standing role as a travel crossroads.
Today, Broadwell celebrates its Mother Road legacy through the annual Red Carpet Corridor Festival each May, welcoming visitors with music, food and classic car cruises. With its unique food legacy, neon memories and community pride, Broadwell remains a tasty stop on Route 66's enduring journey.
