About Bellemont, Arizona: High Country Stop on the Mother Road

Nestled in the ponderosa pine forests of northern Arizona, Bellemont claims a unique distinction as the highest community on historic Route 66 at 7,132 feet above sea level. Located just 11 miles west of Flagstaff, this small mountain town began in the late 1800s as a railroad siding on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, supporting the region's logging and ranching operations in what is now Kaibab National Forest.

When Route 66 was established in 1926, Bellemont became a vital high-elevation rest stop for travelers navigating Arizona's mountainous terrain. During the Mother Road's golden era from the 1940s through the 1960s, the town bustled with gas stations, roadside diners, and motor courts serving both locals and cross-country adventurers.

The Pine Breeze Inn, Bellemont's most iconic landmark, earned lasting fame through its appearance in the 1969 film Easy Rider. Route 66 enthusiasts and movie buffs still seek out this weathered piece of roadside history today.

During World War II, Bellemont's economy flourished when the Navajo Ordnance Depot (now Camp Navajo) opened nearby, bringing military personnel and civilian workers to the area. This wartime facility remains an important part of the region's history.

Today, Bellemont maintains its quiet, small-town character while offering modern travelers access to Kaibab National Forest recreation, original Route 66 alignments and authentic Mother Road experiences. Its cool mountain climate provides a refreshing contrast to the desert heat found along other Arizona sections of Route 66, making it an ideal stop for history buffs and Route 66 travelers exploring northern Arizona's scenic highlands.
