About Barringer Crater, Arizona: The Mother Road's Largest Pothole

Just off Historic Route 66 in Coconino County, about 25 miles east of Flagstaff, sits one of Earth's most-prized geological landmarks: Barringer Crater, more commonly referred to as Meteor Crater

Formed nearly 50,000 years ago, this massive impact site was created when a nickel-iron meteorite, roughly 150 feet wide, struck the Earth at an estimated speed of 26,000 miles per hour. The collision blasted out a crater nearly three-quarters of a mile wide and 560 feet deep, scattering debris for miles and reshaping the Painted Desert forever.

Unlike any other natural landmark, Meteor Crater is considered the most well-preserved meteorite impact site in the World. Its convenient location along Route 66 has made it a legendary roadside attraction for generations of travelers.

In 1902, mining engineer Daniel Barringer proved the formation was caused by a meteorite and not a volcano, as initially believed. This was a major breakthrough that revolutionized planetary science. Today, his name is honored in the crater's official title: Barringer Crater, a designated national natural landmark. The site was even used by NASA in the 1960s to train Apollo astronauts in preparation for the moon landings.

Today, Meteor Crater has transformed into a world-class visitor destination. The Meteor Crater Visitor Center features interactive exhibits on space science and geology, guided rim tours, observation decks, and displays of real meteorite fragments. For modern-day explorers, it's a must-see attraction on Route 66. It perfectly combines scientific wonder, breathtaking natural beauty, and a dash of quirky roadside Americana.

Whether you're fascinated by astronomy, geology, or simply want to see "Route 66's largest pothole," Meteor Crater offers an unforgettable experience that takes you from classic Mother Road nostalgia to the edge of our Solar System - all in the same afternoon.
