About Ash Fork, Arizona: The Stone That Built America
Founded in 1882 along the Santa Fe Railroad, Ash Fork began as a critical stop for trains, settlers, and freight in Northern Arizona. When Route 66 arrived in the 1920s, the town's location, just west of Williams in Yavapai County, made it an essential service hub for motorists traveling the newly christened Mother Road. But Ash Fork's true claim to fame lay beneath its feet, where abundant, high-quality sandstone deposits earned it the proud and permanent title of "Flagstone Capital of the World."
For decades, Ash Fork's quarries supplied building stone used across the United States, from public buildings and university campuses to fine homes and commercial storefronts. This essential industry brought steady work to the community and gave Ash Fork a unique place in American architectural history. Even today, the stone continues to be prized for its durability and beauty, linking modern construction back to the town's storied past.
Among Ash Fork's standout landmarks is DeSoto's Beauty Shop, a quirky roadside icon housed in a former Texaco gas station built in 1957. Its most famous feature is a 1960s-era DeSoto car mounted permanently on the roof, making it one of the most photographed stops on Route 66. The building’s life as a beauty salon added extra charm to its retro appeal. Even after closing permanently around 2011, it continued to attract travelers and photographers eager to capture the perfect shot of mid-century Americana.
Today, Ash Fork offers visitors a quieter, more authentic slice of Route 66. Small local museums and memorabilia shops celebrate the town's dual heritage of railroad service and flagstone quarrying. With its scenic high-desert surroundings, preserved roadside architecture, and unmistakable sense of place, Ash Fork invites travelers to slow down, take in its history, and experience a genuine Mother Road community that remains proudly rooted in its past.
