About Oatman, Arizona: A Town Where Gold, Grit and Burros Roam

Oatman, Arizona is more than just a stop along the Mother Road: it is a step back in time. Perched in the rugged Black Mountains on the original 1926 alignment of Route 66, Oatman was founded in 1863 as a gold mining camp in Mohave County and quickly grew into a boomtown where fortunes were made and lost. When the mines closed in 1942 and Route 66 was rerouted in 1952, Oatman nearly faded into history, but its spirit survived.

Today, Oatman is a thriving Route 66 destination, famous for its free-roaming burros, descendants of the pack animals miners once relied on. These friendly four-legged locals wander the streets, delighting travelers who stop to feed them (with burro snacks available for purchase in town). Watch your dogs though as donkeys will kick first and ask questions later, when provoked.

History buffs can visit the Oatman Hotel (located at 181 Main St), where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon night and soak in the town's colorful frontier atmosphere. Main Street still hosts daily Wild West gunfight reenactments at high noon, and it has authentic saloons and quirky gift shops. And every July, Oatman celebrates its sense of humor and the scorching heat of the Mojave Desert with the annual 4th of July Oatman Sidewalk Egg Fry.

In Oatman, time stands still. It's a place where Route 66 travelers can experience the gold rush history, desert adventures and the delights of meeting the most famous burros on the Mother Road.
