About Beale Wagon Road: The Precursor to Route 66

Much like superheros and the villains who try to defeat them, every road trip also has an origin story. For Route 66, that story begins with the Beale Wagon Road. Surveyed in 1857 by Edward Fitzgerald Beale under the U.S. Army, this ambitious 1,200-mile route stretched from the edge of Arkansas, continuing across Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and ending in California. The road carved a path through some of the most rugged terrain in America. The expedition was so challenging that it famously employed 22 camels to haul supplies, a testament to the harsh conditions of the desert frontier.

The Beale Wagon Road became a lifeline for westward migration, mail delivery and trade. Its path was so practical and well-planned that much of the 1926 alignment of Route 66 followed its exact course through Arizona and New Mexico. Today, sections of this historic road still exist near Kingman, Arizona, offering modern travelers a rare glimpse of the Mother Road's earliest footprint. Each spring, the annual Route 66 Fun Run retraces part of this route, proving that the pioneering spirit of Beale's trail still thunders on.
