About Springfield, Illinois: Lincoln's Hometown on Route 66
Springfield became the capital of Illinois in 1839. A young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln helped bring it here. The Lincoln Home, the only house he ever owned, sheltered his family from 1844 until they left for Washington in 1861. At the Old State Capitol he delivered his "House Divided" speech in 1858. Today the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum tells his story. The Lincoln Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery is his final resting place.
Route 66 took three alignments through town: the 1926 road on Peoria Road and Second Street, the 1930 route on Ninth and Sixth Streets and a 1940 bypass on 31st Street, today's Dirksen Parkway. On Sixth Street the Cozy Dog Drive In has served Ed Waldmire's Cozy Dog since 1949, moving to its current home in 1996. Up Peoria Road, Shea's Gas Station reopened in 2024 as an outdoor exhibit of pumps and signs.
After dark, catch a double feature at the twin-screen Route 66 Drive-In. Every September the Mother Road Festival fills downtown with classic cars. Nearby, Frank Lloyd Wright's Dana-Thomas House shows off Prairie School art glass. Plan your trip with our Illinois Route 66 guide, then head north to Sherman and Williamsville or south to Glenarm and Litchfield.
