About Sapulpa, Oklahoma: Where Creek Heritage Meets the Mother Road

Sapulpa lies along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Creek County in a landscape rich in history. Founded in 1886 and named for a Muscogee (Creek) leader who settled in the area, Sapulpa grew from a small trading post into a bustling town shaped by the oil boom and a thriving glass manufacturing industry.

One of its most iconic Route 66 landmarks is the 1921 Rock Creek Bridge, a steel truss structure that carried highway traffic until 1952 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Other highlights include the 1920s Waite Phillips Service Station (located at 26 E Lee Ave.) and now preserved as a museum. Additionally, the Sapulpa Historical Museum (located at 100 E Lee Ave.), tells the story of the town's railroad roots, industrial growth and its role in America's most famous highway.

Sapulpa also celebrates its Native American heritage, with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation's history woven into the City's identity through cultural events, public art, and historical markers. Annual festivities like the Sapulpa Route 66 Blowout, supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, bring thousands to town for classic cars, live music, and a celebration of the Mother Road spirit.

Today, Sapulpa remains a must-visit destination for travelers, offering a perfect mix of cultural richness, preserved Route 66 history, and small-town warmth: all with the proud legacy of the Creek Nation at its heart.
