About San Fidel, New Mexico: A Roadside Stop for Authentic Art

Tucked along the original 1926 alignment of Route 66 (now NM-124), San Fidel began as a railroad siding on the Rio San José. Its claim to fame arrived in 1916, when Lebanese immigrant Abdoo Fidel built a stout adobe general store with an eye-catching false front.

Two decades later, as the Mother Road roared to life, Fidel reinvented his shop as the Acoma Curio Shop, stocking it exclusively with authentic crafts from nearby Acoma Pueblo. There were no mass-produced trinkets allowed.

From 1937 on, the shop's candy-striped porch posts and hand-painted "Acoma Pottery" signs beckoned Dust Bowl migrants, post-war vacationers, and starry-eyed honeymooners.

Inside, tourists found hand-coiled ollas, intricate black-on-white vases, and bright turquoise jewelry - all displayed beneath vigas darkened by decades of wood-stove smoke. The shop closed in the 1940s, but the thick-walled adobe still stands: its stepped façade and pueblo-style motifs preserved as a National Register landmark and gallery space.

Today, San Fidel remains a quiet detour for Mother Road purists. Weather-worn neon glows above a shuttered Whiting Brothers station, wind whistles through cottonwoods, and the Acoma Curio Shop's blue-trimmed windows still watch the two-lane ribbon unfurl toward distant mesas. This tee is a tribute to the spirit of handcrafted souvenirs and the timeless charm of New Mexico's Route 66.
