About Paraje, New Mexico: A Roadside Stop to Sky City
Nestled along the Rio San José, where black-lava malpaís meets honey-gold sandstone, Paraje began as a colonial para-je (translated as a resting place) on the old wagon road between Albuquerque and Zuni.
The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s, followed by Historic Route 66 in 1926, transformed this humble camp into a bustling stop filled with trading posts, cafés, and Whiting Bros. pumps. Roadside signs once beckoned motorists with bold letters: “See Acoma Pueblo!”
Just twelve desert miles to the south, Acoma Sky City rises like a mirage: its ancient adobe dwellings perched atop a sheer-walled mesa, inhabited since the 1100s. For decades, travelers bound for this legendary citadel first paused in Paraje to top off their tanks, sample green-chile tamales or book tours beneath billboards painted with soaring eagles and kiva ladders.
Today, Interstate 40 hums just north, yet the original Route 66 alignment (NM 124) still threads past the weathered stone walls of the Paraje Trading Post and roadside stands displaying hand-coiled Acoma and Laguna pottery.
Turn south on NM 23, wind through sagebrush flats, and you’ll soon ascend to Sky City’s timeless skyline: a breathtaking reminder that the Mother Road connects not just towns and states, but centuries of living culture.
For Route 66 travelers, Paraje is more than a forgotten stop: it’s a bridge between the ancient and the modern. Here, amidst sandstone, sky, and tradition, the story of America’s most famous highway finds one of its deepest roots: a place where the road meets history and where history still greets every traveler who passes by.
