About Grants, New Mexico: A Boomtown on the Mother Road

Founded in 1881 as a railroad camp built by the Grant brothers, the settlement of Grants first thrived on logging and carrot farming. Everything changed in 1950 when Navajo prospector Paddy Martinez discovered rich uranium ore near Haystack Mesa. Almost overnight, Grants rocketed from a quiet whistle-stop to a global headline, producing more than half of America's uranium and proudly earning the title "Uranium Capital of the World."

The boom transformed Route 66 through town, with sign-lit motels, classic steak houses, and the legendary Sands Motel catering to miners, scientists, and cross-country tourists alike. Today, you can still cruise beneath the retro Route 66 Drive-Thru Arch, tour the New Mexico Mining Museum's underground exhibit or venture to nearby El Malpais lava flows and Mount Taylor's forested slopes.

Though most mines closed by the 1990s, Grants remains a vibrant testament to resilience. Its streets are lined with colorful murals, classic rock shops and vintage neon that keep the Mother Road's glow alive. This town is a striking reminder of America's ambitious Atomic Age, right in the heart of the desert.
