About Chicago, Illinois: A City of Bold Contrasts

Incorporated as a town in 1833 and as a city in 1837, Chicago grew from a frontier outpost into one of America's great cultural and industrial centers. When U.S. Route 66 was designated in 1926, the city became the eastern starting line for travelers heading west.

Chicago has led large U.S. cities in total homicides in many recent years, a reputation with roots in the Prohibition-era gangland violence of the 1920s. That history is part of the city's story, but it has never been the whole story.

Nearby the "Begin Route 66" sign on Adams Street, The Art Institute of Chicago displays Edward Hopper's Nighthawks, a painting that captures the late-night diners found all along the Mother Road. Nearby, Grant Park and Buckingham Fountain give travelers a grand send-off.

For a true taste of the old road, Lou Mitchell's has served hearty breakfasts on Jackson Boulevard since 1923, and many road-trippers make it their first stop before heading west.

Dazzling yet gritty, historic yet modern, Chicago is the ultimate starting point for America's most iconic highway. Collect all three Chicago tees, including the Eastern Terminus of Route 66 and the Homicide Capital of Route 66 editions.
