About Atlanta, Illinois: A Crossroads of Giants
Atlanta, Illinois is where Route 66 travelers find themselves face-to-face with history, along with a few roadside giants. Founded in 1853, this small Logan County town was once a stop for a young Abraham Lincoln, who left his mark on the area's history. Today, visitors can explore Lincoln-related landmarks and the Atlanta Museum before stepping into the town's larger-than-life roadside legacy.
The star attraction is the 19-foot tall Paul Bunyan Muffler Man, a fiberglass giant who has become one of Route 66's most beloved photo opportunities. Clutching a giant hot dog, he serves as both a guardian of the town and a beacon for travelers. Nearby, the newly opened American Giants Museum houses the largest collection of Muffler Men figures in the World. It is a must-see for fans of vintage roadside Americana.
Atlanta's history isn't just about giants. The J.H. Hawes Grain Elevator, dating back to 1904, stands as one of the last remaining wooden grain elevators in Illinois. Meanwhile, the restored Palms Grill Café brought the glow of 1930s neon back to life for hungry travelers, although that establishment has since closed down and it has been replaced with Missy's Sweet Shoppe. Together, these landmarks make Atlanta a stop where Route 66 feels both playful, timeless and larger than life.
